Character Development

In the movie "American History X" the main character Derek Vineyard was really interesting to me. My first impression of him was that he was a mean, racist and cruel person, because he kills a black man out of hate. As his story was told throughout the movie i began to think of him as someone who is brainwashed or alienated into thinking and doing things that deep down he know is wrong. I thought that he was portrayed as someone who was blinded by rage.

The creator of the movie did not reveal Derek's character right off the start. A substantial amount of his character was revealed when he killed the black man in the beginning of the movie, but as hte story progressed and Derek goes to jail, he ends up becoming friends with a black man. His character then develops into someone who feels something other than hate for another race. In the beginning it's like he's not even human, but as he has time to think while he's in jail, he becomes human and has sympathy.
