1. A flashback is an event or a scene taking place before the present time. The flashback starts in the 3rd paragraph when Pete starts to remember when he was seven.
2. The major conflict in this story is between Pete and his father. Pete loved the penny that his father gave him and when he lost it he was scared that his dad be very mad at him. It was resolved when the truth came out and when Pete’s dad found the penny.
Penny in the dust: Questions
1. Pete felt bad because he lost the penny and thought that his dad would beat him for doing so.
2. The father doesn’t return the penny for two reasons. He doesn’t want the boy to lose the penny again and feel bad about it (again). Also he wants to keep it as a treasured memory of some thing him and his son did together.
3. The father shows love by giving the penny to his son, worried that son was missing, helping his find the penny and sharing a moment when he put his arm around Pete when he told his dad what he was doing with the penny.
4. To the father Pete’s world is a childish one and where he finds award and out of place in. to Pete his world seems foolish and that’s the reason why he and his dad can’t get close.
5. The words that moved his father were a meaning that he wanted to spend time with his dad every chance he could get.
6. The penny is symbolic because he had that penny with him till the day he died.
7. Peter’s father lived a serious and responsible life only to give his kids the best life that he could give them. He wanted his children to grow up right. He was never mean to his kids, but he only showed them one side of him.
