1)when Pete's father tells him that he wouldn't have beaten Pete for losing the penny. Pete feels as if he struck his dad because he felt bad for thinking that his father would beat him for losing the penny. he could see that it hurt his father by thinking he would beat him.

2) the father doesn't return the penny to Pete because he wanted to keep it as treasure.

3)-the father gave the penny to the little boy.
-he takes Peter to find the penny
-he didn't beat him for losing the penny
-he cried when Pete told him the story of pretending to dig up treasure.

4) the father felt awkward and concious of trespass. the child could feel the fathers solid step outside the child-world's foolish fragility.

5) the child's story touched the father because it made the father happy that his son wanted good things for them and wanted to have fun with his dad.

6) the penny is symbolic because it symbolizes their relationship.

7) the father is quiet, and he doesn't really know how to show his love for his son. sometimes he comes off as if he doesn't love him, but really he does, he just has a different way of showing it. he is tough on the outside but on the inside he's a softie.
